miri specials: other places..

another cafe that fahmi took me to for dinner in miri was cafenika.. i guess cause the table we chose was outside the cafe, the lighting was not so good.. and i didn't really get to enjoy the food as much. i have to see what i eat.. so?

anyway, i ordered the nasi ayam with roasted chicken and salad. i thought it'd be like the typical nasi ayam with the actual salad.. but rupanya jauh panggang dari api. the chicken was nice tho.. no argue there.. but they served it with coleslaw.. and they don't even serve soup with it.. :( i was hungry so, i ate them anyway.. looks nice tho.. ain't it?

when fahmi had a meeting in kuala belait, brunei.. he took me with him. i don't mind the wait.. but he was really concerned. at first i wanted to lepak at the surau, but i intended to watch the people and listen to their conversations, try to catch some of the phrases they normally use.. and see what they eat mainly. so, i just sat at a corner in the cafeteria. fahmi even gave me 20 dollars so i don't starve...

bought myself a malay newspaper. and sat there.. during lunch time, most of them ordered mi goreng (fried noodles) so i reckoned it should be one of their specials. and so i foolishly ordered too. i even asked for mi goreng daging dengan telur mata kerbau. i thought it would be like one of those special mi goreng we're normally served here.. i was stunned when i looked at the dish. it was plain noodles cooked in soy sauce, with meat and fried egg on top.. more like the mi kicap served at convent dulu.. huhu.. luckily they had the condiments on each table.. something like served in sabah. hmm.. i wonder.. but then, it only costs me $2.20. so, i guess ok la.. what do u expect?

miri specials: idaman cafe

there's another cafe around saberkas we frequented.. idaman cafe. the service was damn slow! the waiters are clueless.. and they refuse to have eye contact with the customer.. but there're many people that went there.. so, the food should be good right? not really.. hehe

fahmi ordered the kueyteow tomyam tulang. weird combo. but the tomyam was really nice. i'd never thought of having tomyam tulang.. but they served it here.. and at 7 ringgit a bowl it should be nice! taste not bad.. fahmi likes it. the tomyam was ok lah..

the laksa sarawak i had here at idaman was really different from the one at sabrina corner. the gravy was heavily spiced. not really my cup of tea but after a while it was ok la kot.. when u're not really thinking of it.. emm... the one at sabrina was really light. i kinda preferred that. i really dig the limau laici drink they served. forgot to take photos of it. it's really that good.. i think i'd like to try make it at home.
another night we came to the restaurant, we ordered seafood tomyam, udang goreng kunyit and baby kailan ikan masin with white rice.. but they took forever to serve the food.. and the waiter screwed our order up. instead of tomyam, it was sup seafood... which tasted horrendous.. and instead of udang goreng kunyit, it was udang goreng tepung. luckily the udang goreng tepung was nice.. i ate most of it.. heheh.. sapa suruh fahmi makan nasi dulu without waiting for the udang? haha... and i ended up with an allergy attack the next day.. boo hoo.. no photos of the screwed up order, cause we were both starving when the food finally arrived..
overall, if u're starved, or even hungry, don't ever come here.. but the drinks are nice.. especially the iceblends..

miri specials: sabrina corner

this restaurant, is somewhat ermm.. uninviting. the deco wasn't really nice.. there's a buffet table in the middle of the restaurant and the buffet table were mounted by old magazines. i have no idea why they're there.. went there on the third day of my stay. fahmi took me there for brunch.. sort of.

i ordered the kueyteow goreng style penang (fried kueyteow penang style). i was under the impression that i ordered the char kueyteow. hehehe.. yeah right. it kinda looked like the kueyteow ladna (i think). it really reminds me of the mi goreng basah that rofi ordered when we were in tawau. sumthing like that laarr..

this fried kueyteow was fried with soy sauce and baby clams. it was weird, but it tasted nice.. and i finished it. go figure.. :P

then there's one night, we had dinner there, and fahmi had to order the nasi goreng ayam and sup tulang. the sup tulang was nice.. and the tulang was errmm.. fresh. but the nasi goreng ayam was different. usually the chicken would be obvious. i tried the laksa sarawak special. yummy.. :D and their air tiga assam. the air tiga assam is actually a mix of lemon, lime and asam boi juice. tasted like lime juice.. hehehe..

air tiga assam
sup tulang
nasi goreng ayam
laksa sarawak special..

miri specials

Sawadeeekaappp.... Chiang Mai Special 4

Cafe De Siam..

Located just around the corner from Imperial Mae Ping, Cafe De Siam became our "bus stop" during our stay in Chiang Mai. It's actually a coffee house, and the interior decor sort of reminds me of star bucks and delifrance. it's not overly crowded, and everytime we went there, we could only see foreigners frequenting the outlet. the coffee was good. i especially recommend their siam coffee shake. it's really delicious. it doesn't have that awful after taste. it's really nice.

price wise it's kinda expensive. service was good.. well depending on who's waiting your table. cause it can be slow. we missed the bus on the second day cause the server took a long time getting our bill. but they were nice. it's all that matters especially after a really long walk and your feet really hurt and you need to just relax.

i didn't try the sandwiches.. often too full from lunches or dinners.. but i did try the mocha cake. i think they put the cake in the fridge for too long, the cream hardened. otherwise the cake was very kind to my taste buds. fabulous! no wonder i developed the extra two tires when i came back from chiang mai.

for the ambience, the service and the best coffee and milk shakes, i'd give 2 thumbs up.

Camera... action.. take 2.. huhu... penat... that's me drinking the siam coffee shake.

That's blueberry banana milk shake.. loved it.. too bad i had it on the last day.. would have gotten it everyday.. if only i knew it was that good.. :P (tu yang bertambah berat sekilo tu)

normi's drinking her favorite drink at cafe de siam.. iced chocolate. it's iced chocolate three days in a row.. :P

Sawadeeekaaapppp... Chiang Mai Special 3

our third restaurant would be el-ruammit. it's right next to arabia restaurant in the anusarn market. opposite of asma. so, if you'd like to have good halal food, just go to anusarn and find these restaurants. they are in the center of the bazaar.

el-ruammit or honey chicken barbeque restaurant is a small restaurant that sells thai/chinese halal food. actually a malaysian family told us that they had dinner at el-ruammit but the fish was kinda smelly. we ordered fish but we asked the fish to be fried with garlic.. boy it was delicious.

we had a big stomach.. i mean a big feast that night. and we finished it all. . we ordered fried fish with garlic, fried chicken with chilli, broccoli with shrimp, seafood tomyam, kerabu sotong, to be eaten with plain rice. we each order iced lychee and iced longan and they only cost us 225 Baht. hehee.. the fish was perfectly fried. it didn't smell fishy at all, but the seafood tomyum was kinda sweet. and they put fish in the tomyum, not to my liking. i kinda regret it that i didn't ask for the honey bbq chicken, must've been good since they are called that. but there's always next visit right? minta2 la ek?

the location was perfect, it's about 3 blocks from the mosque, and right in the middle of anusarn. can always take the tuk tuk there. or you can always walk if u're staying at the night bazaar.

sawadeekaaapp... Chiang Mai Special 2

the next restaurant in my chiang mai special is a punjabi restaurant. it's down the street from imperial mae ping. i'm not sure what's the name of the street. but it's right next to wat chang kung. there were big signs leading to it.. halal restaurant that way.. halal restaurant this way..

anyway, the restaurant was quite.. we thought it was because it's not meal time just yet. when we arrived a punjab woman greeted us. convinced that she can provide us with halal meals, we sat down and ordered.yellow rice and my chicken in chilli,
normi's masala and white rice and some vege pakora

i ordered yellow rice and chicken with chilli, while normi had plain rice with chicken masala. we also ordered vegetable pakora. thought it would be fried vegetables, cause the description sort of gave us that idea. turned out it was jemput-jemput sayur. cehh... looked over-fried and the sauce was not good at all. the only good thing about it was that we were hungry and the food was edible.

alhamdulillah... for 260 Baht, i think asma restaurant was way better.. two thumbs down lah..

sawadeekaaappp... Chiang Mai special..

i'm gonna do it differently this entry.. not gonna tell about makan place in bangi.. instead, i'll highlight the halal restaurants we went to during our visit to chiang mai, thailand..

asma restaurant..

location: behind the peak center in anusarn night bazaar.
rating:
  • taste: two thumbs up
  • price: kinda high for my pocket...
this was the first halal restaurant we found in chiang mai. actually we've already googled the halal restaurants available in chiang mai, and 4 names came up including asma restaurant. we sort of stumbled upon asma restaurant, we're looking for arabia restaurant which turned out was located right opposite of asma.. but it was raining pretty heavily and we're desperately needed shelter and food. so, asma we went.

we had bombay briyani, normi and i. it's actually a chicken briyani + potato. we also had mutton curry with it. normi asked for plain water and i opted for mango lassi..

Delicious mutton curry... yumm..

they cost 225 baht, which was about RM22.50. quite an expensive deal for briyani. but we were starving, and we had plenty of baht cash at that moment of time. so, no biggie.

Bombay briyani.. chicken and potato briyani

the mutton curry was delicious. but the service was kinda awful for me. i guess when you have to pay that much for a lousy briyani and curry, you're expecting more from the waiter. so i only left them 5 baht for tips. hehe.. ok la tu got tips. the waiter was kinda rude when we asked what's their speciality.. but they were fast. kudos for that.

Sri Kemudi, BB Bangi Seksyen 7

Finally.. an update! it's been a while since i last updated this blog.. i haven't been eating out as much lately.. the oil price hike and the fact that i'm actually watching my weight seem to be good enough a reason. anyway, this morning, since the cafe operator is again changing (it's not even a year yet..their reasons were too spooky to discuss in this cute blog.. so, i'll just leave it to your imagination), nomie and i went out for breakfast. my mission was to get me some roti canai. headed to section 7 in Bandar Baru Bangi to eat (it's right in front of PKNS). chose to eat at sri kemudi.. i think that's what it says on the sign board anyway.. can't really read the sign while driving.. they used cursive for their signboard. anyway, i referred to it as the kedai low-profile. ate there once or twice for dinner.. not some hot spot in bangi .. not like the other restaurants in that area anyway.. the tv is a mere 21" tv.. not a favorite hangout for the kaki bola.. and no bright lights.. but the restaurant is always full..of boys. thought there would be cute waitress or something.. but didn't see any cute girls there.. except me of course. haha. cute boys ada lahh.. err.. the waiter is adorable. i think he must be the owner's son or something. cause the restaurant seemed to be a family operated restaurant or watchamacallit... anyways, like i always say to ali when we're on the road, a full restaurant is always a good restaurant. and it's true for this particular restaurant. good food.. simple recipes. even the menu is relatively simple. no special names for their drinks or nasi goreng.. not many items on the menu.. but they taste good. and it's all that matters.. and the portion is quite big. so, worth the money. but that's last year.. haven't been to the restaurant for ages.. and this morning, went there with nomie.

the morning menu is quite a variety. they have nasi kerabu, laksam, roti canai, nasi goreng, nasi lemak, nasi himpit with kuah kacang and lontong, mi goreng, bihun goreng.. just to name a few.. no wonder the restaurant is full at 8 am on a saturday. well looking at the food, made me starving, so i got myself a nasi kerabu with ayam goreng.. tak pe la.. can work out later what?? hehehe... and an iced tea. sedap.. but the price.. whoa.. very expensive.. luckily i brought my wallet and not just the purse i always carry for breakfast.. would be embarrassing trying to pay with coins.
This particular set, costs me RM4.50. actually i think price is pretty high since i could get a better deal at putrajaya.. tastes better there too.. this one, ok la.. just price too much!
